AWESOME! Sounds like a fun project. I would love to work with you on this …

My background is in character development and I’ve mostly designed for TShirts and Giftware for Tourism across Canada. I’ve designed for all of the big Resorts like Whistler, Jasper, Banff… and Attractions like Marineland. Most recently I am designing for Georgia Music Hall of Fame, I work quickly, always plan everything with sketches first, to create better quality designs… and I do my research. If I’m designing a Robot in the Woods.. in a 50 ’s pulp culture style. I’ll gather tons of source material and offer a few layouts and styles. You’re obviously a fan of Virgil Finlay..so I could draw reference from that style. or is the Robot like The Iron Emperor from Blackhawk or something out of War of the Worlds.. or maybe it’s one of the Cybermen or Daleks from Dr. Who. In anyway case, I put real thought into everything i do. I work on a Mac in CS2 and can prepare whatever format you require. I can also prepare art colour separated for screenprint, if you needed to use on a tshirts. Thanks for your consideration

Thank you for responding! I like that you seem enthusiastic about this idea. Can I ask you what your first thought of what Robot in the Woods looks like? Truth be told, thats what I want to see; your interpretation.

Let me briefly describe the concept. Robot in the Woods is actually an art promotion business and alternate model for distribution of art work. I am commissioning pieces now as “seeds” to attract other artists to contribute. My main drive artistically/experimentally is to see all possible renderings of Robots in the Woods and to develop a repository of images. Its a low cost way for mass exposure to the idea and to the individual artists.

From an arts promotion point of view, this Robots in the Woods gallery is an advertising tool which will provide links to your portfolio. There are still a lot of kinks I need to work out, but would you like to hear more as the idea solidifies?

Hi Kevin,

Yes I thought it was an interesting name Robot in the Woods and I quite literally pictured a Vintage Pulp Robot in the Woods :D and the robot and Big Foot (Sasquatch ) appearing in the woods but hidden a bit… so you’re not really sure if you actually see a Sasquatch and a Robot or you’re just imagining it… like a Where’s Waldo, UFO sighting kind of thing :D

I thought the idea behind a Robot in the Woods was interesting, because it’s almost an oxymoron.. why would a Robot be in the woods and not in some futuristic city ? What’s his story is he lost. ? Did his ship crash ? Is he really there?

Now that you’ve explained the nature of your site, it makes sense to me… The Robot is the artist lost in
cyberspace…..and is as mysterious as the Sasquatch..because people may or may not find them or believe they exist, unless someone snaps a photo or in the artist’s case, brings the viewer to a gallery.. Am I getting it ? Or do I sound like a philosophical Flake ? :D

I’d also be very interested in learning more about your site. My website is currently being revamped.. but I hope to have it back on line soon….and I would be interested in connecting with other sites.

I am approaching this, similar to your suggestion, of having a variety of artists displaying their work on Robot in the Woods with a link back to your website/portfolio. The pieces I commission are the ideas I cannot draw myself, but want to see in reality. However, what I am fascinates me about this idea are the infinite ways Robot in the Woods can be rendered. I have found that the mention of the idea conjures up something different for everyone. The bigfoot version is actually not my vision, its a co-conspirator. My vision is of a robot kicking back against a really cool tree with sky full of a spiral galaxy and an owl, Virgil Finlay style. One friend said that the robot carves a heart into a tree using his laser finger, with the name of his robogirlfriend written in binary code, My wife said “oh, with parrots and monkeys?” which I think is a reflection of her having grown up in a tropical environment. My brother drew one with a picnic basket. Another wants to see a robot with a map, as if lost. So, this is an idea people are really having fun with.

I was very pleased with your reaction as an oxymoron. The nature versus technology theme seems to resonate. What is the robot doing in the woods? Why is it there? How did it get there? Why does this exist? How do we make sense of it?

Regarding whether you are getting philosophical, nothing thrills me more. I am a philosopher of sorts too and really, this is perhaps the geekiest thing I have ever done in my life. My primary selfish motive is to see as many interpretations of robot in the woods as possible. It is my contribution to the act of bringing art into the world. But its also business minded as a new marketing strategy for self-promoting artists. The idea is pretty solid, but I have just started writing how I think it will work. In fact, you have been very helpful in asking me questions.

So, I need a recruit and someone interested in participating this project on a longer term basis. I want you to be my test case for realizing my ultimate goal to have artists who WANT to contribute because they see the value in terms of marketing and merchandising. I want to see a kick-ass Robot in the Woods
