A Personal Statement About Robot in the Woods

March 10th, 2008 | Category: Conversations, General

In many ways, this website is neither about Robots, nor the woods. Robot in the Woods is a vehicle for developing a community of artists and promoting their work. However, robots are a bit of an obsession for me. And as Mark Cuban once said, “If you have an exit strategy, its not an obsession.” Truth be told, Robot in the Woods is my entrance into the concept-o-sphere. I want to operationalize all those techy buzzwords and apply them to the arts to grow not only my business, but yours. We’re talking trendy slogans such as web 2.0, the hive-mind, the long tail, virtual communities, intellectual property, connectivism, crowdsourcing, etc. But I am also hoping to use this as a venue to advance some of my own buzzwords: MicroGrants, MicroCommissions, open-source microfranchising and communal capitalism. Murtha’s Clone Wars

March 10th, 2008 | Category: General, Living in the Sci-Fi Era

Did anyone see in Wired about the Army’s $200 Billion Robot Army? It seems that Rep. Murtha (D-Pa) wants another $20 billion for a clone army. Well, at least that’s how I misread the title of the article. It actually said “Reboot” rather than “Robot.” I guess I got overexcited about a $200 Billion robot project. Anyway, isn’t a mistake like this how Terry Gilliam’s Brazil got started?

My Current RFP on Guru.com: Will they accept this type of proposal?

Dear Sir or Madam,

In the spirit of full and accurate representation of myself, I am presenting myself as a hobbyist interested in finding financing for supporting the arts. I am writing to ask if the RFP I am writing below is acceptable under your terms of use. This is a proof of concept for operationalizing a term called a “MicroGrant”. For any blog posts, may I mention Guru.com? And would you consider putting an ad on my page? If it works, I would be happy to share credit. Properly marketed, it could be a big revenue stream for you.

Robot in the Woods: Evolution of the Bigfoot-bot

March 08th, 2008 | Category: Artist Review

My friend, who wishes to remain anonymous because he is a teacher and is skeptical of the online world, has contributed his vision of Robot in the Woods. In this case, it is a bigfoot-esque robot tromping through the woods. This is the scene J. Strange used to create his professional vision of robot in the woods. See images below to get a sense of the evolution of this drawing.

RoboCop 1.0 - The Bum Bot

March 07th, 2008 | Category: Living in the Sci-Fi Era

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/06/bum.bot/index.html

Now we are seeing Robots autonomously patrolling the streets to spray the homeless with water like dogs doing it in the road.  This bum-bot is further evidence that we are living in the Science Fiction era with tinges of RoboCop, 1984 and 2001: A Space Odessey (in that the robot has one big red eye).

Note to Starbucks - Don’t Make Me Change My Language

March 07th, 2008 | Category: Living in the Sci-Fi Era

Ever since they took 3 hours off last week for a nationwide training, it seems that Big Brother Starbucks is requiring that I participate in thier doublespeak. I refuse! When I order a medium coffee, I want a medium coffee. You can call it tall, grande, supremo or some other made up language, but we all know what I mean. I want a medium coffee. On top of that, it seems that if I ordered an iced supremo quad shot, splenda caffee latte frappacino, they would expertly translate that into a tasty hot beverage. But as soon as I utter the word ‘medium’, you act like that word does not even exist. I refuse to participate in your fascist word-smithing and will happily walk a couple of extra blocks for a coffeeshop that does not participate in such dictatorial tactics.
